Ithaca Trips Up Lacrosse, 14-6

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 18, 2010) – Junior midfielder Katie Hurley racked up four goals and one assist to lead the Ithaca College women’s lacrosse team to a 14-6 victory over non-conference foe Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at Lake Lytal Park. It was the final spring break game for both squads, who were taking part in the annual SpringFling this week. The Lyons entered the contest riding a three game winning streak.

Attackers Nicole Borisenok and Kylie McLure added three goals apiece for Ithaca, which collected its first triumph of the 2010 campaign. The Bombers finished with a 27-23 advantage in the shot column.

Mount Holyoke was paced by junior attacker Clara Raugei, who recorded her third hat trick of the season. Senior midfielder Perry Markell posted one goal and one assist. Meanwhile, sophomores Hilary Bombard and Alex Crean netted one goal apiece. The Lyons picked up 14 of the 22 draw controls.

Ithaca scored five straight times to gain control of things midway through the first half. Hurley’s third tally of the day put the Bombers in front 7-2 at the 12:34 mark. Her team enjoyed a 9-3 edge at the break.

Mount Holyoke clawed its way back into the contest with a 3-1 run over the first 10 minutes of the second stanza. Bombard converted a free position opportunity to slice the deficit to 10-6 with 20:54 remaining in regulation, but Ithaca outscored the Lyons 4-0 down the stretch to seal things.

Senior Courtney Dowell got the start between the pipes for the Bombers. She made six saves in just over 39 minutes played. At the other end, sophomore Jeanmarie Petersen turned away nine shots for the Lyons.

Mount Holyoke (3-2, 0-0 NEWMAC) will return to action next Thursday at Bridgewater State College beginning at 4:30 p.m.
