Lacrosse Rolls Past Westfield State, 20-12

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (March 11, 2010) – Senior midfielder Perry Markell piled up six goals and eight draw controls to lead the Mount Holyoke College women’s lacrosse team to a convincing 20-12 triumph over non-conference foe Westfield State College today at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field. It was the Lyons first win of the 2010 campaign. They are now perfect in two contests against the Owls.

Mount Holyoke also received a boost from senior midfielder Kristen Cody, who recorded her third career hat trick to go with a career best two assists. Senior attacker Peggy Wefald found the net five times, while sophomore midfielder Taylor Hedges matched her personal high of three goals. Junior attacker Clara Raugei chipped in with four points on two goals and a pair of helpers. The Lyons finished with a 22-12 advantage in draw controls.

Westfield State was paced by junior midfielder Rachel Dionne, who posted two goals and one assist. Joining her with two tallies were first year midfielder Ari Colella, sophomore attacker Carly Keeley and first year attacker Maura Stack. The Owls outshot the hosts 33-32.

Mount Holyoke scored the first three goals of the game and led 6-1 after Hedges found the back of the net for the second time in a row at the 19:08 mark. The Owls sliced the deficit to 7-4 with 10:47 remaining in the opening frame, but Mount Holyoke rallied for four of the next five tallies to take an 11-5 edge into the intermission. Wefald registered all five of her goals before the break, including three in a span of 3:12 late in the period.

The Lyons outscored Westfield State 4-2 in the early stages of the second stanza to pull away. Cody’s third goal of the contest put the hosts in front 15-7 with 21:51 to go. From there, the margin never fell below six goals.

Sophomore Jeanmarie Petersen racked up a career best 13 saves between the pipes for Mount Holyoke. At the other end, first year Britta Anderson turned away seven shots for the Owls.

Mount Holyoke (1-1, 0-0 NEWMAC) will spend its spring break in West Palm Beach, Florida next week. The Lyons are slated to face off against Norwich University at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, Keene State College at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday and Ithaca College at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. Westfield State (1-1, 0-0 NEWLA) will return to action on Saturday, when it travels to Baltimore, Md. for a contest against the College of Notre Dame at 4:00 p.m. The game will be played at Goucher College.
