Crew Finishes Sixth at ECAC National Invitational Collegiate Regatta

WORCESTER, Mass. (May 9, 2010) – The Mount Holyoke College women’s crew team grabbed sixth place overall at the Eastern College Athletic Conference National Invitational Collegiate Regatta today. Twenty programs participated in the event, which took place at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. Mount Holyoke’s three varsity boats, as well as its novice boat competed.

Ithaca College secured top honors with a score of 65. Williams College and Smith College rounded out the top three with 60 and 58 points, respectively. The Lyons totaled 48 points.

Mount Holyoke’s varsity eight boat finished in 10th place overall and eighth among NCAA Division III squads. The Lyons started the day with a fourth place showing in their preliminary heat (7:13.628). They then nabbed fourth place in the Petite Final (6:59.606), crossing the line in front of both Smith College and Simmons College. The top three finishers in the Petite Final were the College of the Holy Cross (6:55.213), Williams Smith College (6:57.688) and Wellesley College (6:58.990).

After taking fourth place in its initial heat (7:35.939), Mount Holyoke’s second varsity boat grabbed fourth place in the Petite Final (7:24.877). The Lyons finished 10th overall and eighth among Division III entrants. Meanwhile, Mount Holyoke’s third varsity boat collected fifth place in its opening round heat (8:31.933) before taking third in the Petite Final (8:29.113).

Mount Holyoke’s novice eight boat posted a fifth place finish out of 11 competitors. In their initial heat, the Lyons grabbed third place (7:42.456). They then moved on to the Grand Final, where they finished fifth (7:26.426).
