Field Hockey Falls to Amherst College in Non-Conference Play

Amherst, Mass. - September 9, 2021 - The Mount Holyoke College field hockey team fell to Amherst College, 8-0, on Thursday evening in a contest that was played at Gladchuk Sports Complex on the campus of UMass Amherst.

With the loss, Mount Holyoke College drops to 0-2 on the year while Amherst claimed victory in their season-opening contest and improve to 1-0 on the year. The Mammoths, which are receiving votes in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Rankings, held a 30-6 advantage in shots over 60 minutes of play.

First-year Rachel Katzenberg (Reistertown, Md.) got the nod for the Lyons and picked up 12 stops in 45 minutes of play before being relieved by Andie Hardin (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who took on a pair of shots in 10:24 of action. Leah Manning (Durham, N.H.) played the final 4:36 of the game.

Amherst got on the board just 5:14 into the contest on a goal from Abbey Kays, before the hosts pushed their lead to a pair when Mufaro Mazambani scored an unassisted goal to make it 2-0 with 4:38 remaining in the first quarter. 

With 7:49 to play in the first half, Amherst made it 3-0 on a goal from Beth Williamson, before Natalie Hobbs found the back of the net to give the Mammoths a 4-0 lead at the break.

Amherst's Caroline Donahue and Sam Maynard each picked up a goal in the third quarter to push the Mammoths' lead to six, before Williamson and Courtney Lowe finished off the scoring in the 8-0 victory.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will make the trip to Thomas College on Saturday, September 11 for a 1 p.m. tilt.
