Field Hockey Blanks Western New England, 8-0

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Junior captain Kirsten Kilburn tallied four goals and added two assists to lead the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team past Western New England University, 8-0 in non-conference action on Saturday. The victory moves the Lyons to 5-0 on the season, while the Golden Bears fall to 1-3 overall.

Kilburn (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) got things going in the 7th minute after she scored into the left far post off a penalty corner pass from first year Charlotte Wagner (West Chester, Pa./Westtown School) for the 1-0 advantage. It would be Kilburn once more to give the Lyons a two-goal lead in the 17th minute after she gained control at the top of the arc and sent a hard shot through traffic and in.

Mount Holyoke's third tally came off the stick of sophomore Sarah LaQuerre (Old Orchard Beach, Maine/Cheverus) when she scored off a pass from junior Laura Murphy (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) from the outside into the left corner through traffic in the 21st minute. Junior Diana Banmann (Hannover, Germany/University of Potsdam) then made it a 4-0 advantage when she redirected a shot from Kilburn past Golden Bears keeper Emily Arnold (Gilford, N.H./Gilford).

In the second stanza, the Lyons continued to dominate on offense as Kilburn tacked on her third of the game off a penalty stroke in the 44th minute. First year Jessica Taylor (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) then made it 6-0 for MHC, tallying the first of her collegiate career off a deflected Kilburn shot.

Following Kilburn's fourth tally of the game, Taylor added her second of the season in the 69th minute, collecting a feed from first year Maura Anderson (Newcastle, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) to seal the MHC victory.

In the MHC goal, first year Liz DiCesare (Westford, Mass./Bishop Guertin) improved to 5-0 on the season, playing the first 23:29 without having to make a stop. Classmate Ally Tessier (Coventry, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey School) came on in relief, stopping three shots over 25:24 before giving way to first year Mariesa Mazzone (Gilroy, Calif./Gilroy), who played 21:07.

For Western New England, Arnold posted six saves in the first half, before giving way to first year Jessica Hale (Westfield, Mass./Westfield), who stopped eight shots.

Mount Holyoke held the 35-4 advantage in shots, while also leading in penalty corners by a 6-1 margin.

The Lyons return to action on Wednesday at Simmons for a 7pm contest. The Golden Bears also play on Wednesday, hosting conference-rival Salve Regina at 7pm.
