Tennis Tops Union in Season Finale, 7-2

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (April 17, 2010) – The Mount Holyoke College women’s tennis team rounded out its 2009-10 campaign with a 7-2 triumph over Union College this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Tennis Courts. With their fourth straight win, the Lyons remained perfect in seven all-time meetings between the programs. They closed out their season with an overall record of 10-11 and a spring mark of 6-4.

Senior Sarah London, sophomore Heather Richardson and first year My-Linh Nguyen each posted wins at both singles and doubles for the hosts.

Mount Holyoke jumped out to a commanding lead by way of a doubles sweep. Junior Natalie Hsiang and sophomore Sarah Moore posted an 8-4 win at the number one slot, while Nguyen and London prevailed 8-2 in their number two contest. The Lyons number three tandem of first year Carly Peltier and Richardson held on for an 8-5 victory.

The Lyons then collected wins in four of the six singles contests to seal things. First year Nahrhee Han posted a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 triumph at the number two spot in her first match of the spring. She returned to the lineup after suffering an injury at the tail end of Mount Holyoke’s fall slate. After falling behind 5-1 in the first set of her number four match, London rallied for a 7-5, 6-2 win. Meanwhile, Richardson grabbed a hard fought 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3) victory at the fifth slot, and Nguyen won in straight sets at number six.

Union’s two points came from senior Hallie Mabrey and sophomore Brittany Gilbert. Mabrey claimed a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Hsiang at the number one singles position, and Gilbert downed Moore 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 at number three singles.

After facing off against Smith College at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon, Union (3-7, 1-3 LL) will travel to RPI for a Liberty contest on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. The Liberty League Tournament is scheduled to take place next weekend in Canton, N.Y.
