Tennis Narrowly Defeats RPI, 5-4

TROY, N.Y. (April 3, 2010) – Senior Sarah London and first year My-Linh Nguyen captured victories at both singles and doubles to lead the Mount Holyoke College women’s tennis team to a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute this afternoon at Sharp Courts. It was the Lyons third win in a row.

RPI (3-6) took two of the three doubles matches to gain control of the match in the early going. Mount Holyoke’s lone point came from London and first year Nguyen, who raced to an 8-1 triumph at the number two position.

The Lyons rebounded in singles play, taking four of the six matches to seal things. London picked up a 7-5, 6-0 win at the number three position, and first Carly Peltier added a 6-4, 6-0 victory at the number six spot.

Sophomore Heather Richardson overcame deficits in both sets before prevailing 6-4, 7-5 in her number four contest. Then, with the match on the line, Nguyen came through with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 victory at the fifth slot to put things away for the visitors.

Mount Holyoke (8-11, 3-4 NEWMAC) will return to action next Saturday versus Roger Williams University at 10:00 a.m.
