2010 Seven Sisters Tennis Championship: Day 2

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (March 28, 2010) – The Mount Holyoke College women's tennis team posted 3-2 victories over host Smith College and Bryn Mawr College to secure a third place finish at the 2010 Seven Sisters Championship today.

In the final match of the day, Vassar College edged Wellesley College 3-2 to secure the title. The Brewers finished the tournament with 17 points and a 4-0 record. They ended the Blue’s five year run as champions.

Wellesley’s 16 points were good for second place overall. Mount Holyoke, Smith and Bryn Mawr took third (8 points), fourth (5 points) and fifth (4 points) places, respectively.

Mount Holyoke edged Smith 3-2 in its first match of the day. First year Carly Peltier came up with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at number three singles to set the tone. Both of the Lyons doubles tandems then cruised in their matches to seal things. Junior Natalie Hsiang and sophomore Sarah Moore combined for a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at the number one slot, while senior Sarah London and first year My-Linh Nguyen picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at the number two position.

The Lyons closed out the weekend with another 3-2 victory in their second match of the day against Bryn Mawr. Once again, Peltier got things going with a 6-1, 6-0 win at number three singles, and both doubles pairings prevailed in straight sets. Hsiang and Moore secured a 6-3, 6-2 win at the number one doubles position, while London and Nguyen raced to a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at the number two spot.

Mount Holyoke (7-11, 3-4 NEWMAC) will resume play next Saturday at RPI beginning at noon.
