Tennis Slips Past Puerto Rico Mayaguez, 5-4

MAYAGUEZ, P.R. (March 16, 2010) – The Mount Holyoke College women’s tennis team opened up its spring break trip with a thrilling 5-4 triumph over the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez today. It was the first of two contests for the Lyons in Puerto Rico this week.

With the match in the balance, senior Sarah London came up with a dramatic 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-5) victory in her number one singles contest to seal things for Mount Holyoke.

The Lyons also received solid production from first year Carly Peltier and junior Rose Cantlin, who each prevailed at both singles and doubles. After combining for an 8-5 victory in their number two doubles contest, they each picked up 6-3, 6-4 triumphs in their respective singles matches.

Mount Holyoke’s remaining point came from first year Kirsten Schneider, who held on for a 6-4, 0-6, (10-4) win at the number six singles slot. It was her first collegiate victory.

The Lyons (5-8, 3-4 NEWMAC) will wrap up their spring trip against SUNY New Paltz on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Humacao, Puerto Rico.
