Tennis Falls to Bates in Spring Debut, 9-0

???SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (March 6, 2010) – The Mount Holyoke College women’s tennis team kicked off the spring portion of its 2009-10 slate with a 9-0 setback to Bates College today at the Mount Holyoke Tennis Courts. It was the Bobcats first dual match of the season and their sixth straight win over the Lyons.

Bates was paced by Alexandra Piacquad, Meg Anderson, Katie Helfgott, Ashley Brunk and Erika Blauth, who each came out on top in both singles and doubles.

Bates swept the doubles matches to gain control of things. Piacquad and Anderson picked up an 8-3 win at the number one slot, while Blauth and Brunk prevailed 8-4 at the number two position. The Bobcats number three tandem of Helfgott and Jacquelyn Holmes added an 8-2 victory.

The guests then took all six singles points to seal things. Piacquad, Anderson, Helfgott, Brunk, Blauth and Jean Gulliver earned victories at the numbers one to six positions, respectively.

Mount Holyoke’s top performance came from senior Sarah London, who took Helfgott to three sets before falling 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 10-5.

Mount Holyoke (4-8, 3-4 NEWMAC) will return to action at the end of the month, when it participates in the Seven Sisters Championship at Smith College. After facing off against Vassar College at 11:00 a.m. and Wellesley College at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, the Lyons will take on the host Pioneers at 9:00 a.m. and Bryn Mawr College at 1:30 p.m. the following day. Bates (1-0, 0-0 NESCAC) is scheduled to tangle with Smith later this afternoon. The Bobcats will visit the University of Southern Maine on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
