Tennis Competes in NEWITT

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Oct. 18, 2009) – Four Mount Holyoke College women’s tennis team tandems competed in the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) over the weekend. The three day tournament took place on the campuses of Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke and Smith College. In each round, the duos played one doubles and two singles matches against their opponents.

First years Nahrhee Han and My-Linh Nguyen made up the Lyons number one team, which competed in the Gail Smith Flight “A” Draw. After downing Springfield College’s number one pair 3-0 in the first round, they fell 3-0 to the number one team from Bates College in the round of 32. Han and Nguyen then dropped a 3-0 decision to Middlebury College’s number three team in the Second Round Consolation.

Mount Holyoke’s three remaining duos took part in the Chris Davis Flight “B” Draw.

Its number two team of senior Sarah London and sophomore Sarah Moore edged the number four team from Connecticut College 2-1 in the first round before suffering a 3-0 setback versus Williams College’s number five tandem in the round of 32. They also took part in the Second Round Consolation, falling 3-0 to Amherst College’s number six team.

Junior Rose Cantlin and first year Carly Peltier made up the Lyons third entrant. They were downed 2-1 by Simmons College’s number three in the opening round but rebounded with a 2-1 triumph over a combination team from Amherst and Middlebury in the “B” Flight Consolation.

Mount Holyoke fourth team consisted of senior Elizabeth Tighe and sophomore Heather Richardson. The tandem got things going with a 3-0 victory over the number four team from Brandeis College but later dropped a tough 2-1 decision to Trinity College’s third group in the round of 32

The Lyons will round out the fall portion of their 2009-10 slate at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament next weekend. Quarterfinal Round action is scheduled to begin on Saturday, and the Tournament will conclude with a pair of Semifinal Round contests, as well as the Championship, on Sunday. MIT will host the entire tournament. Seeds will be determined later this week.
