Tennis Picks Up Key Win Over Springfield, 8-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Oct. 13, 2009) – Using a balanced attack, the Mount Holyoke College women’s tennis team sprinted past New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Springfield College 8-1 this afternoon at the Appleton Tennis Courts. With the win, the Lyons secured a spot in the NEWMAC Tournament for the sixth straight season.

Nahrhee Han, My-Linh Nguyen, Natalie Hsiang and Sarah London each picked up victories at both singles and doubles to lead the way for Mount Holyoke.

The Lyons set the tone early, sweeping the three doubles matches. Han and Nguyen held on for a 9-8 (7-5) triumph at the number one spot, while Hsiang and Sarah Moore earned an 8-6 victory in their number two contest. London and Carly Peltier chipped in with an 8-4 win at the number three position.

Mount Holyoke then took five of the six singles matches to seal things. Han, Hsiang, London, Nguyen and Heather Richardson prevailed at the numbers one, two, four, five and six spots, respectively.

The Pride’s (1-8, 1-6 NEWMAC) lone point of the day came from Sam Carney, who came out on top in her number three singles contest against Moore.

Mount Holyoke (4-6, 3-4 NEWMAC) will return to action this weekend, when it participates in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament. The event is slated to take place from Friday through Sunday on the campuses of Mount Holyoke, Amherst College, Hampshire College and Smith College.
