Wellesley Storms Past Tennis, 8-1

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Oct. 3, 2009) – The Wellesley College women’s tennis team stormed past Mount Holyoke College 8-1 in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Tennis Courts. It was the Blue’s 17th straight victory over the Lyons.

Sophomore Marie Watanabe, senior Jacqueline Siddique, junior Jacqueline Shen and senior Meghan Stubblebine each recorded wins at both singles and doubles for Wellesley, which improved to 3-1 on the year.

The Blue took control of the matches with a pair of doubles triumphs. Shen and Siddique claimed an 8-4 victory at the number one spot, while Stubblebine and Watanabe prevailed 8-0 in their number two contest. Mount Holyoke’s lone doubles point came from senior Sarah London and first year Carly Peltier, who cruised to an 8-2 win at the number three slot.

It proved to be the Lyons lone point of the day, as Wellesley won each of the six singles matches in straight sets. Watanabe, Siddique, Shen, junior Nathalie Herman, Stubblebine and first year Mariya Chokova prevailed at the numbers one through six positions, respectively.

Mount Holyoke (2-4, 1-3 NEWMAC) will return to action on Tuesday, when it hosts Clark University for a NEWMAC contest beginning at 4:00 p.m. Wellesley (3-1, 3-1 NEWMAC) is slated to resume its schedule tomorrow at Williams College starting at 1:00 p.m.
