Smith Trips Up Tennis, 6-3

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 29, 2009) – The Smith College women’s tennis team earned a 6-3 triumph over New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Tennis Courts. It was the Pioneers first victory of the 2009-10 campaign.

The Pioneers were paced by Gianna Teague, Jaimi Inskeep and Alanna Dick, who each came out on top in both singles and doubles.

Smith took control of the contest with a pair of doubles victories. Teague and Inskeep got things going with an 8-5 victory at the number one slot, and Dick teamed up with Clair Oblamski for a 9-8 (7-3) triumph in their number three contest.

Mount Holyoke’s lone doubles win came from its number two duo of junior Natalie Hsiang and sophomore Sarah Moore, who prevailed by a score of 9-8 (7-3).

The Pioneers nailed down victories in four of the six singles matches to seal things. Holly Reich and Iskeep cruised to straight sets wins at the numbers two and three positions, respectively. Meanwhile, Teague captured a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win the number four slot, and Dick came out on top 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in her number six contest.

First year Nahrhee Han recorded a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 triumph at the number one position, and sophomore Heather Richardson added a 6-4, 7-5 win at the number five spot for the Lyons.

Mount Holyoke (1-3, 1-2 NEWMAC) will return to action on Thursday, when it visits Simmons College for a non-conference contest beginning at 4:00 p.m. Smith (1-2, 1-2 NEWMAC) is slated to resume its NEWMAC schedule at home against Wheaton College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
