CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (Sept. 26, 2009) – Led by first year Carly Peltier, the Mount Holyoke College women’s tennis team picked up a thrilling 5-4 triumph over New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe MIT this afternoon at the duPont Tennis Courts. Peltier won at both singles and doubles for the Lyons, who picked up their first victory of the 2009-10 campaign. They had fallen in each of the previous 19 meetings with the Engineers dating back to the 1990-91 season, when they came out on top 5-4.

Mount Holyoke took control of the contest with a pair of doubles victories. Junior Natalie Hsiang and sophomore Sarah Moore earned an 8-5 win at the number two spot. Meanwhile, Peltier and senior Sarah London overcame a late deficit to pick up a 9-8 (7-2) triumph in their number three match.

MIT (1-1, 1-1 NEWMAC) came on strong in the singles contests, taking the numbers one through three matches in straight sets. Refusing to give in, the bottom of Mount Holyoke’s lineup responded with three straight sets victories of their own. First year My-Linh Nguyen came out on top 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 at the number four spot, and sophomore Heather Richardson added a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at the number five position. Then, with the match in the balance, Peltier prevailed 6-4, 6-3 in her number six matchup to seal things for the Lyons.

Mount Holyoke (1-2, 1-1 NEWMAC) will return to action on Tuesday, when it hosts Smith College for a NEWMAC contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
