Wheaton Upends Tennis, 6-3

???SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 12, 2009) – The Wheaton College women’s tennis team overcame an early deficit to defeat Mount Holyoke College 6-3 this afternoon in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both squads. It was Wheaton’s third straight victory over Mount Holyoke, which was playing its first match of the 2009-10 campaign.

Mount Holyoke jumped out to a 2-1 edge behind a pair of doubles victories.

Junior Natalie Hsiang and sophomore Sarah Moore held on for a 9-8 (9-7) triumph at the number two slot. Meanwhile, senior Sarah London and first year Madeline Loughridge picked up an 8-2 in the number three contest.

Wheaton’s lone doubles point came from its number one duo of juniors Sarah Geocaris and Catherine Teague, who won 8-0.

The guests responded by taking five of the six singles contests.

Geocaris, Teague and sophomore Allesandra DiOrio captured straight sets victories at the numbers one, two and four positions, respectively.

Junior Ellen Van Faasen grabbed a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over London at the third slot, while sophomore Rosalyn Chesky earned a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 triumph over first year My-Linh Nguyen in the number five tilt.

Mount Holyoke’s lone singles victory came from sophomore Heather Richardson, who prevailed 6-2, 6-3 at the number six slot.

Mount Holyoke (0-1, 0-1 NEWMAC) will return to action next weekend, when it competes in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Championships. The tournament is scheduled to take place from Friday through Sunday at MIT. Wheaton (3-1, 1-0 NEWMAC) is slated to travel to the University of Rhode Island for a non-conference contest beginning at 3:00 tomorrow.
