Soccer Collects NEWMAC Postseason Accolades

BABSON PARK, Mass. (Nov. 11, 2009) – The New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) recently announced its women’s soccer award winners for the 2009 season. After helping her team to the NEWMAC Tournament Championship over the weekend, MIT’s Lauren Hernley was named Athlete of the Year for the Conference. Cassey Muse of Wheaton College was selected as the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year, while Wellesley College’s Tony Mohammed was tabbed NEWMAC Coach of the Year. The Coast Guard Academy earned the NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award.

Representing Mount Holyoke were seniors Terry Orr and Lauren Orr. The sisters were joined on the NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team by first year goalkeeper Ingibjörg Magnúsdóttir.

Terry Orr was selected to the NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team for the first time in her career. The third year captain anchored a Lyons defensive unit that surrendered just 15 goals during league play. Mount Holyoke was at its best over the final two weeks of the regular season, when it posted a 3-1-1 mark to cement its spot in the NEWMAC Tournament. Led by Orr, the Lyons allowed just five goals during that span.

No stranger to NEWMAC postseason accolades, Lauren Orr was also voted to the All-Conference Second Team at the conclusion of her sophomore campaign. This season, the forward racked up 11 points on four goals and three assists to pace the Mount Holyoke offensive attack. Two of her tallies went down as match winners. Orr erupted for two goals and one assist in the Lyons 9-2 triumph over the Coast Guard Academy (10/27). In addition, she knocked in the winner in her team’s 2-0 upset triumph over Springfield College (10/13). For her career, she totaled 22 goals and 12 assists.

Magnúsdóttir joined the Orr sisters on the NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team. The goalkeeper made an immediate impact on the Mount Holyoke program after joining the squad from Iceland. She posted a goals against average of 1.90, a save percentage of .763 and three shutouts. Magnúsdóttir recorded shutouts in upset victories over Springfield (2-0) and Clark University (1-0) (10/20). In addition, she recorded a season best 12 saves in the Lyons 1-1 tie with eventual NEWMAC Tournament Champion MIT (10/24).

Mount Holyoke closed out its 2009 campaign with an overall record of 4-12-1. The Lyons went 3-5-1 versus league foes and advanced to the NEWMAC Tournament for the second year in a row. Their season came to an end in the Quarterfinal Round, where they were ousted by top seeded Wellesley College 3-1.
