"Lyon of the Week" Award Goes to Markell

Senior soccer team member Perry Markell has been named “Lyon of the Week” for the week of October 25 - November 1. The midfielder racked up five points on one goal and three assists in a 1-1 week for Mount Holyoke. Markell pushed the Lyons to a convincing 9-2 triumph over the Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday. After setting up her team's first two tallies of the contest, she converted a penalty kick in the 24th minute to put things out of reach. With their fourth straight win over the Bears, the Lyons secured a spot in the NEWMAC Tournament for the second year in a row. They faced off against top seeded Wellesley College in the Quarterfinal Round on Saturday, falling 3-1. Sophomore midfielder Mary Cooke recorded their lone goal off a feed from Markell. Markell closed out her senior campaign with two goals and three assists. For her career, she amassed five goals and six helpers. Mount Holyoke rounded out its 2009 campaign with an overall record of 4-12-1. The Lyons went 3-5-1 versus NEWMAC foes.
