???SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Oct. 24, 2009) – The Mount Holyoke College women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at the Mount Holyoke Soccer Field this afternoon. It was the Lyons first regular season deadlock since they knotted Clark University 1-1 on October 7, 2006.

MIT jumped out to a 1-0 advantage just 15:58 into the contest, when first year Emily Kuo tallied her team leading 11th goal of the season. The forward collected a pass near the left sideline and dribbled around two Mount Holyoke defenders toward the middle. After eluding the second Lyon, she snapped a shot into the lower left corner of the net from just outside the box.

Mount Holyoke took advantage of a corner kick chance to knot things up at 1-1 in the 34th minute. Following the initial serve by senior midfielder Perry Markell, classmate Jesse Sugrue trickled a shot past first year goalkeeper Meghan Wright. The attempt was stopped at the line by an MIT defender, but the rebound went right to junior forward Jacquelyn Archibald, who proceeded to net her first goal of the year.

From there both squads went scoreless over the remainder of regulation and two overtime periods. Mount Holyoke came up with three team saves in extra time to preserve the tie. Junior defender Colleen Regal made the first on a shot by sophomore forward Alisha Lussiez in the first overtime. Then, Sugrue turned away consecutive tries by Kuo and first year Merricka Livingstone in the second extra stanza.

MIT finished with a 27-26 edge in shots, while Mount Holyoke posted 9-6 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Wright and first year goalkeeper Ingibjörg Magnúsdóttir made 12 saves each.

Prior to the contest, a senior day celebration took place to honor Markell, Sugrue, Lauren Orr, Terry Orr and Brigitte Buehler for their contributions to the Lyons program.

Both clubs will wrap up their regular season slates with NEWMAC matches on Tuesday. Mount Holyoke (3-11-1, 2-5-1 NEWMAC) is scheduled to visit the Coast Guard Academy at 6:00 p.m., while MIT (8-5-2, 4-2-2 NEWMAC) is set to host Clark University at 7:00 p.m.
