???WORCESTER, Mass. (Oct. 20, 2009) – Senior midfielder Perry Markell snapped a scoreless tie in the 75th minute, catapulting the Mount Holyoke College women’s soccer team to to a stunning 1-0 triumph over New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Clark University this evening at Granger Field.

Markell netted the winner off an assist from classmate Jesse Sugrue at the 74:17 mark. After collecting the feed, she floated a shot over Clark senior goalkeeper Joanna Clark from the right side of the box. It was her first tally of the season and her second career match winner.

With their second league win of the year, the Lyons put an end Clark’s seven match unbeaten streak. The Cougars were undefeated in contests against NEWMAC opponents prior to tonight’s shocker. Markell’s goal also ended Joanna Clark’s shutout streak, which had reached 638:19 and stretched over parts of eight contents.

Clark (8-5-2, 4-1-2 NEWMAC) fell despite advantages in both shots (11-6) and corner kick chances (4-2). First year goalkeeper Ingibjörg Magnúsdóttir turned in a terrific effort, making ten saves en route to her second shutout of the fall. Joanna Clark came up with one stop for the hosts.

Mount Holyoke (3-11-0, 2-5-0 NEWMAC) will put the finishing touches on its 2009 home slate on Saturday, when it hosts MIT for a league tilt beginning at 1:00 p.m.
