SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Oct. 6, 2009) – Powered by sophomore forward Eleanor Theurer, the Smith College women’s soccer team blanked longtime rival Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Soccer Field. Theurer figured in on both goals for the Pioneers, who picked up their first New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) triumph of the 2009 campaign. It was their fourth straight win over the Lyons.

Theurer found the net for what proved to be the winner just 3:26 into the match, when she dribbled past the Mount Holyoke defense and beat first year goalkeeper Ingibjörg Magnúsdóttir.

The Pioneers extended their cushion to 2-0 in the 31st minute on first year Emily Peake’s first collegiate tally. Theurer started the play with a cross into the box from the left side that found the foot of Peake, who one-timed a shot past Magnúsdóttir from point blank range.

Mount Holyoke fell despite a 22-6 edge in the shot column. Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Gregor made 11 saves en route to the shutout. She benefited from one defensive save in the first half and two shots by Lyons in the second frame that struck the crossbar. Magnúsdóttir turned away one shot for the hosts.

Both squads will resume their NEWMAC slates on Saturday. Mount Holyoke (1-9-0, 0-3-0 NEWMAC) is scheduled to visit WPI at noon, while Smith (2-7-1, 1-1-1 NEWMAC) is set to host the United States Coast Guard Academy at 1:00 p.m.
