SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 26, 2009) – Led by senior forward Lindsey McManus, the Wheaton College women’s soccer team downed Mount Holyoke College 2-0 this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Soccer Field. McManus figured in on both goals for the guests, scoring one and assisting on the other. It was the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both squads.

Both teams went scoreless until the 25:30 mark, when first year forward Cassey Muse used a feed from McManus to record what proved to be the match winner. It was her team leading eighth tally of the 2009 campaign. After dribbling around a Mount Holyoke defender, McManus took a few steps into the box and slipped a short cross to Muse on the right side. Muse received the pass and beat first year goalkeeper Ingibjörg Magnúsdóttir short side.

McManus then put things away for Wheaton in the 69th minute, when she netted her first goal of the year off an assist from junior defender Emily Hough. Hough started the play with a long lob pass from the left side. After collecting the ball off a bounce in the box, McManus fired a shot past Magnúsdóttir far side.

Wheaton finished with advantages in both shots (26-7) and corner kick chances (4-2). Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Cawley got the start between the pipes for the visitors. She made two saves in the first half before giving way to classmate Lindsay Leddy, who stopped one shot in the second stanza. Cawley was credited with her first win of the season. Magnúsdóttir finished with seven saves for the hosts.
