SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 15, 2009) – Sophomore forward Courtney Carrier knocked in the match winning goal in the 83rd minute, boosting the Mount Holyoke College women’s soccer team to a 2-1 triumph over previously unbeaten Lesley University this evening at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field. It was the Lyons first victory of the 2009 campaign.

Both squads went scoreless until the 27:24 mark, when Lesley senior Cathryn Folkestad bent in a corner kick from the left side. The defender’s second tally of the season was the lone score of the opening frame.

Mount Holyoke finally broke through for the equalizer in the 59th minute, when sophomore midfielder Mary Cooke registered her first collegiate tally. Fellow midfielder Mallory Phaneuf was credited with the assist on the play after her cross found a streaking Cooke, who one-timed the ball out of the air past senior goalkeeper Hailee Lowe. It was the Lyons first goal of the year and the first allowed by the Lynx.

The contest was still knotted up at one goal apiece until Carrier found the back of the net for what proved to be the winner with just under eight minutes remaining in regulation. After collecting a crossing feed from first year midfielder Veronica Farmer, the forward twisted around one Lesley defender and ripped a shot past Lowe from about ten yards out. It was the first goal of her career.

Mount Holyoke outshot the Lynx 19-12, and both teams had two corner kick opportunities. Lyons first year goalkeeper Ingibjörg Magnúsdóttir recorded five saves en route to her first collegiate win. Lowe suffered her first loss of the year despite finishing with 11 stops.

Both squads will return to action on Thursday. Mount Holyoke (1-2, 0-0 NEWMAC) is set to visit Connecticut College at 4:00 p.m., and Lesley (3-1, 0-0 NECC) is scheduled to host Gordon College at 8:00 p.m.
