Montclair State Tops Soccer, 3-0

PURCHASE, N.Y. (Sept. 13, 2009) – Using a balanced scoring attack, the Montclair State University women’s soccer team cruised to a 3-0 triumph over Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at the 2009 Valiant Classic. It was the Red Hawks third consecutive victory.

In today’s other contest, Western Connecticut State University downed host Manhattanville College 1-0. Both squads ended the weekend with one victory apiece. Montclair State posted a perfect 2-0 mark, while Mount Holyoke went winless. All four contests took place at GoValiant.com Field.

Montclair State got on the board in the 16th minute, when senior defender Tina Della Fave collected a loose ball in the box and beat Lyons first year goalkeeper Ingibjörg Magnúsdóttir.

The Red Hawks then iced things with a pair of tallies in the second stanza. First year forward Marisa Zayac tapped in a cross by senior forward Natalia Sisti in the 69th minute, and junior midfielder Jackie McGrath found the net from the corner of the box in the 77th minute.

Montclair State (4-1, 0-0 NJAC) outshot the Lyons 21-8 and finished with a 6-0 edge in corner kick opportunities. Senior goalkeeper Leah Tepperman made five saves en route to the shutout. At the other end, Magnúsdóttir totaled nine stops.

Mount Holyoke (0-2, 0-0 NEWMAC) will kick off its home slate versus non-conference foe Lesley University Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. The contest is scheduled to be played on the Turf Field.
