PURCHASE, N.Y. (Sept. 12, 2009) – The Mount Holyoke College women’s soccer team fell 3-0 to Manhattanville College this afternoon in its 2009 season opener at the Valiant Classic. Junior goalkeeper Ali Bromson recorded her third consecutive shutout for the hosts, who improved to 4-0 for the first time in program history. It was the first ever meeting between the two programs.

Montclair State University downed Western Connecticut State University 3-1 in today’s second match. The invitational will conclude with two more contests tomorrow at GoValiants.com Field. Mount Holyoke will face off against Montclair State at noon, and Manhattanville will take on Western Connecticut State at 2:30.

Both teams went scoreless until the 27:48 mark, when sophomore midfielder Natalie Green found the net to put the hosts in front 1-0. Seniors Elizabeth Olsen and Amanda Perez were credited with assists on the play.

First year forward Brittney Smith notched an unassisted goal to push Manhattanville’s cushion to 2-0 with less than six minutes remaining in the first half.

The Valiants then put things away in the 56th minute, when classmate Charlotte Hotaling scored off an assist from junior forward Holly Nonis.

Manhattanville finished with large advantages in both shots (24-2) and corner kicks (11-3). Bromson made one save, as she extended her shutout streak to 274:23. At the other end, Mount Holyoke first year Ingibjörg Magnúsdóttir turned away 11 shots in her first collegiate outing.
