Amherst Takes Title at Massachusetts State Invitational

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (April 16, 2010) – Paced by first year Elizabeth Monty, the Amherst College women’s golf team earned top honors at today’s Massachusetts State Invitational. A total of four squads participated in the event, which took place at the par-72 (5,840 yards) Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, Mass.

Monty narrowly edged out two time reigning champion Kimberly Eaton of Wellesley College for medalist honors. After posting matching scores of 80 (+8) during regulation play, Monty prevailed on the fourth playoff hole. Amherst junior Hayley Milbourn finished just two strokes off the pace (82) in third place.

The Lord Jeffs recorded a team score of 333 to secure first place in the team competition. They were followed in the final standings by Wellesley (346), Mount Holyoke (376) and Westfield State College (441). In addition to Monty and Milbourn, three other golfers from Amherst finished in the top seven overall.

Leading the way for the Lyons was junior Sarah Keating, who grabbed fifth place with a score of 86. Sophomore Alexandra Irish carded an 88 to earn eighth place. Meanwhile, senior Tiffany Shute posted a 17th place finish with her tally of 98. The field included 25 competitors.

Mount Holyoke will tee off again this weekend at the annual Jack Leaman Championship, hosted by Amherst. The tournament, which will take place at both the Orchards and Hickory Ridge Country Club, is slated to begin tomorrow and conclude on Sunday.
