Golf Collects Third Place at Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (Oct. 4, 2009) – Sophomore Alexandra Irish and junior Aliza Hanif pushed the Mount Holyoke College women’s golf team to a third place finish at the Middlebury College Invitational this weekend. A total of seven teams and 39 individuals took part in the tournament, which was hosted by the Ralph Myhre Golf Course (par 71 – 5,852 yards).

Amherst College secured the team title with a two day score of 643 (318, 325), while Williams College (654) and Mount Holyoke (670) rounded out the top three.

The Lord Jeffs were paced by Hayley Milbourn, who took home the individual crown with a ten over score of 152 (76, 76). Teammate Elaine Linn and Anne O’Leary of Williams finished in a deadlock for second place with matching tallies of 156.

Irish grabbed fifth place overall to pace the Lyons. She was at her best on Saturday, when needed just 76 strokes to complete the first round. Entering the second and final day of competition, she was tied with Milbourn at the top of the standings. The sophomore ended the weekend just six shots off the pace (158 – 76, 82). Hanif’s final score of 160 (79, 81) was good for seventh place overall. The Lyons also received a boost from first year Kate Merrill, who chipped in with a 20th place result (174 – 93, 81).

Mount Holyoke will return to action on Sunday, when it competes in the Williams College Fall Classic. The two day tournament is slated to conclude the following day.
