Late Rally Pushes Coast Guard Past Basketball, 58-48
NEW LONDON, Conn. (Feb. 20, 2008) - First year guard Jennifer Tamminen (Northwood/Irvine, Calif.) racked up a career-high 23 points off the bench to help the Coast Guard Academy women's basketball team to a 58-48 triumph over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Mount Holyoke College this evening in New London, Conn. The Bears overcame a ten-point second half deficit en route to completing the season sweep of the Lyons.Trailing 43-33 with 8:47 remaining in regulation, Coast Guard rallied for 19-straight points over a span of 4:16 to gain control of the contest. Tamminen drained four of her six three-pointers during the stretch. For the game, she shot 7-of-11 from the floor and converted all four of her free-throw attempts. Seventeen of her 23 points came after the break.
Coast Guard shot 39.6% (21-53) from the field and made 11 three-pointers. Sophomore forward Melissa Martinelli (Vero Beach, Fla./Sebastian River) recorded a double-double on 13 points and ten boards. The Bears also received a boost from senior guard DeCarol Davis (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park), who tallied 12 points.
Mount Holyoke knocked down 37.5% (18-48) of its shots from the floor and outrebounded the hosts 39-31. The Lyons built a 29-22 halftime advantage behind 11 first half points by sophomore guard Erin Cain (Quincy, Mass./Fontbonne Academy). Cain finished with a team-high 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field. She knocked down both of her three-point attempts and all four of her shots from the charity stripe. Junior guard Katie Austen (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) contributed ten points and six rebounds, while senior forward Marisa Barone (Ludlow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) pulled down a game-high 11 boards.
With the win, Coast Guard (20-4, 10-2 NEWMAC) secured at least the second seed in next week's Conference Tournament. The Bears still have an outside shot to take their first ever regular season title with a win over Springfield College and a Wheaton College loss to Clark University on Saturday.
Mount Holyoke (5-18, 2-10 NEWMAC), which has been mathematically eliminated from postseason contention, will round out its 2007-08 slate at home versus Babson College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
