Sceats Leads Riding to Seventh Place at IHSA National Championships

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 8, 2010) – With junior Lindsay Sceats leading the way, the Mount Holyoke College riding team rounded out its 2009-10 campaign with a seventh place finish at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) National Championship Horse Show this weekend. A total of 19 teams from around the nation competed in the event, which was hosted by Kentucky Horse Park.

Skidmore College amassed 28 points en route to the High Point Championship in the Collegiate Cup Hunter Seat Team Division. Centenary College and the University of Findlay finished in a deadlock for second place with 20 points apiece, while the University of Kentucky grabbed third with 18 points.

Rounding out the field were Hollins University (12), Stanford University (12), Stonehill College (12), Delaware Valley College (11), Virginia Intermont College (11), Cazenovia College (9), Mount Holyoke (8), the College of Charleston (6), West Texas A&M University (4), Lafayette College (3), West Virginia University (2), Oregon State University (0), Sewanee University (0), St. Mary-of-the-Woods College (0) and Truman State University (0).

Sceats captured top honors in the prestigious Cacchione Cup Class to highlight the weekend for Mount Holyoke. The team captain became the third rider in program history to achieve the feat. She joined Claudia Barth (1990 - Fitch Cup) and Laena Romond (2002 - Cacchione Cup). Sceats had previously been crowned High Point Rider for both Zone 1 and Zone 1, Region 3.

In addition to her individual success, Sceats also contributed five points to Mount Holyoke’s team total with her second place showing in the open fences division. The Lyons remaining three points came from first year Allison O’Neill, who grabbed fourth place in the intermediate fences division.

Sophomore Jordan McMullen (novice flat) and junior Amanda Ross (walk-trot-canter) collected seventh place finishes in their respective classes. Meanwhile, Sceats took 10th place in open flat.

O’Neill (intermediate flat), first year Sally Gibb (novice fences) and junior Belinda Wenke (walk-trot) also represented Mount Holyoke in the team competition.

Individually, sophomore Margaret Swanson took home fifth place in the novice fences division, and junior Elizabeth Tripp competed in the open fences division.
