Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Sept. 12th

SOCCER

Mount Holyoke went 1-1 in its second week of action, falling to #19 Amherst, 2-0, before defeating Wesleyan, 2-0. Sophomore defender Avia Jacobs (Calabasas, Calif.) netted the evenutal game-winner against the Cardinals. MHC (2-2) is back on the pitch on Tuesday when it hosts Western New England at 6pm. The Lyons close out the week on Saturday, opening their NEWMAC slate at Babson for a 2pm clash.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey went 1-1 last week, shouldering a tough 4-3 loss to #15 Amherst before going on to down Castleton, 6-2. Senior forward Charlotte Wagner (West Chester, Pa.) recorded five goals on the week, including four against the Spartans. MHC (1-2) is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Williams in a 7pm match. The Lyons close out the week on Saturday, at Thomas (Maine) for a 12pm non-conference tilt.

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke posted a 2-1 record last week, besting Simmons (9-0) and Emerson (9-0), and falling to #31 Wellesley (7-2). Sophomore Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan) was outstanding, going 3-0 on the week in singles action to improve to 5-0 overall. MHC (4-1; 2-1 NEWMAC) returns to the court on Saturday, traveling to MIT for a 12pm conference match against the Engineers.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons went 1-2 last week, posting a 3-1 win over MCLA, but falling to Rhode Island (3-0) and Salve Regina (3-0) on the road. Sophomore middle hitter Jamesa Allen (Orlando, Fla.) had a solid week, posting 24 kills. Mount Holyoke (2-3) returns to action on Tuesday when it opens NEWMAC play at Babson (7pm). The Lyons conclude the week on Saturday at Emerson (1pm).

CROSS COUNTRY

Under the direction of sixth-year head coach Jennifer Adams, the cross country team opened its season last weekend, finishing seventh overall at the Smith College Invitational. Sophomore Veneta Cholakova (Yambol, Bulgaria) paced the Lyons efforts, finishing 21st overall in a field of 97 runners. MHC is back on the course on Saturday when they travel to east to compete in the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational. Action begins at 12pm.

 

GOLF

Led by sixth-year head coach Tim Walko, the Lyons golf team opens its 2016-17 season on Saturday at the Ann S. Batchelder Invitational, hosted by Wellesley College. Action on Saturday begins at 11am, while Sunday will be a 9am start. MHC is coming off a 2015-16 campaign in which it finished third at the Liberty League Championships, aided by the All-League First Team efforts of June Conti (Amenia, N.Y.) and Allison Shilling (New Canaan, Conn.).

 

RIDING

The Lyons riding team, under the direction of 33rd-year head coach CJ Law, kicks-off its 2016-17 season this week. MHC will head to Goucher College in Baltimore, Md., to compete in the Preseason Tournament of Champions. The Lyons look to build off last season's success as they finished as the Reserve Champions at the IHSA National Championships, paced by Collegiate Cup Walk-Trot-Canter National Champion, Sabrina Fox (Westfield, Mass.).
