Cross Country Posts Strong Finish at UMD Invitational

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The Lyons cross country team had an outstanding effort on Saturday, finishing second of 16 teams in the sub varsity race at the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational. MHC was paced in the 5k race by overall winner Sunny Shan.

Shan recorded a time of 19:56.72 to win the race, which featured 180 runners. Sophomore Veneta Cholakova crossed the line second on the team and 16th overall with a time of 20:43.63, while first year Brigit Wolf came across seconds later in 18th with a mark of 20:49.01.

The Lyons picked up the trifecta soon after as sophomore Corrin Moss, junior Mia Barnes and first year Emma Raney finished 26th (21:07.57), 27th (21:08.40) and 28th (21:09.17), respectively. First year Kayla Dillon finished just outside the top 30, crossing 32nd (21:13.25) on the afternoon, while classmate Alicia Moroyoqui was 42nd (21:29.41) overall.

Junior Kelly Stevens was next across for MHC, finishing 47th in the 5k race (21:37.08), followed by first year Michelle Serrano in 56th (22:04.19).

Rounding out the efforts on the day was junior Julia Criscione and first year Caitlin Lynch, who finished 125th (24:19.15) and 159th (26:58.73), respectively.

The Lyons were just edged out for the team victory by Holy Cross, which finished with 54 points. MHC totaled 66 points for runner-up, followed by Connecticut College (74), Westfield State (74) and Coast Guard (145) to round out the top five.

Mount Holyoke is now idle until October 1 when it travels to New York to compete at the Saratoga Invitational, hosted at Saratoga Spa State Park. Action begins at 11am.
