Coast Guard too much for volleyball despite Rimando's match-high 17 kills

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The U.S. Coast Guard Academy started off hot and never let the Mount Holyoke College volleyball team back into the match, as the visiting Bears defeated the host Lyons 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-21) Tuesday night in Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.

Coast Guard (16-8, 6-4 NEWMAC) tied with Smith for fourth place in the NEWMAC standings, with one match remaining in its regular season.

Mount Holyoke (13-13, 4-6 NEWMAC) missed a chance to clinch a postseason berth, but the Lyons will now look to do so in the regular-season finale on Saturday at Wheaton. The Lyons remain tied with Wellesley for seventh place in the conference.

Coast Guard led for the entire first set, hitting at a .394 rate and earning a sideout on 13 of Mount Holyoke's 14 serves. The Bears raised their attack percentage to .455 in the second set and finished the match at .352, while Mount Holyoke had a .121 attack percentage.

Lyons senior Elle Rimando (Mililani, Hawaii) pounded a match-high 17 kills, her 11th straight match with a double-digit kill total. Sophomore Olivia Murray (Miami, Fla.) added eight kills and senior Madeline Barton (Brookfield, Wis.) tallied six. Junior Kyra Staples (Chatham, Ill.) had a team-high 12 digs and 22 errorless serve receptions. Senior Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, Minn.) had 27 assists and seven digs.

Amelia Matson led Coast Guard with 13 kills. Abigail Schweitzer and Sarah Somer had seven kills apiece, while Corey Lemmer and Samantha Ventimiglia combined for 11 kills and one error on 15 swings. Coast Guard also tallied nine team blocks, with Eloise Shirley tallying five block assists. Laila Baaumeur led the Bears with 20 digs.

Mount Holyoke plays its final home match on Thursday at 7pm against non-conference opponent Elms.
