Volleyball opens renovated Howard Gymnasium with loss to UMass Boston

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team took the first set of the evening from UMass Boston before the visiting Beacons reeled off three straight sets for a 3-1 (18-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-13) non-conference victory in the Lyons' home opener on Wednesday night.

The match was the first official event in the newly renovated Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.

UMass Boston (3-8) attacked at a .185 percentage for the match and held Mount Holyoke to a .008 mark, helped in large part by the Beacons' 13 team blocks.

Addie Blomgren led the Beacons' defense with one solo block and eight block assists, to go with six kills. Paige Coulson had a match-high 14 kills on 36 attempts (.278), and Lauren Westlund added 10 kills on 20 attempts (.300). Mary Matthews had a match-high 24 digs.

Mount Holyoke senior Elle Rimando (Mililani, Hawaii) led the Lyons with 13 kills and two blocks, tying Westlund for the match high with 16.0 points. Senior Madeline Barton (Brookfield, Wis.) had seven kills and sophomore Olivia Murray (Miami, Fla.) added six.

Senior Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, Minn.) had 31 assists and 11 digs in the match for her third double-double of the season.

Mount Holyoke (5-4) will host a tri-match on Saturday, with the Lyons playing Simmons at 11am and Fitchburg State at 3pm.
