SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The No. 18 nationally ranked MIT women's volleyball team dominated the first set and went on to cruise to a 3-0 (25-6, 25-18, 25-16) victory over Mount Holyoke College in a NEWMAC match Saturday afternoon at Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.
The Engineers (8-1, 2-0 NEWMAC) attacked at a stellar .706 percentage in the first set, with 12 kills and no errors on 17 attempts, while limiting the host Lyons (4-5, 0-2 NEWMAC) to a -.105 percentage in the same set.
Mount Holyoke regrouped to fare considerably better in the subsequent two sets, but MIT was too strong to allow a comeback.
Ella Gragg led the MIT attack with seven kills and no errors on 10 attempts (.700), while Ashley Margetts added six kills on 13 attempts (.385) to go with a match-high 13 digs. Ali Gibbs also had six kills and Claire Underwood added five to the visitors' cause. Sofie Kupiec distributed 28 assists.
Senior Marion Abeja (Kumi, Uganda) and first-year Madeline Barton (Brookfield, Wis.) shared Mount Holyoke's team lead in kills with four apiece. Abeja added a team-high nine digs and four blocks, while Barton served up three aces. First-year Elle Rimando (Mililani, Hawaii) contributed three kills and two blocks, and first-year Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, Minn.) posted 11 assists in the match.
Mount Holyoke will play at Clark University on Tuesday in a NEWMAC match beginning at 7pm.
