Volleyball blanks Cazenovia to wrap up 2-1 weekend at Colby Classic

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team swept Cazenovia College 3-0 to finish the Colby College Classic with a 2-1 record on Saturday, right after the tournament host Mules defeated the Lyons by a 3-1 score.

Mount Holyoke (3-3) will play its home opener and begin NEWMAC play on Tuesday at 7pm against Smith College in Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.

Colby 3, Mount Holyoke 1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-14)

The Lyons began the day hot off of the previous night's 3-0 win over Northern Vermont-Lyndon, taking the first set from unbeaten Colby with an impressive .296 attack percentage to Colby's .051. First-year middle hitter Elle Rimando (Mililani, Hawaii) had three of the Lyons' 10 kills in the set.

The Mules regrouped to win each succeeding set by a wider margin than the last. LJ Grant paced Colby with 14 kills on 30 attempts (.367).

Rimando led Mount Holyoke in the match with eight kills against four errors on 17 attempts (.235) to go with two blocks. First-year outside hitter Madeline Barton (Brookfield, Wis.) added seven kills and four blocks, and seniors McKenna Crosby (Jonesborough, Tenn.) and Mar Simon (Miami, Fla.) contributed six kills apiece in the match. Sophomore libero Lucie Berclaz (Hull, Mass.) had a team-high 20 digs and senior Marion Abeja (Kumi, Uganda) posted 16 digs with 23 assists.

Mount Holyoke 3, Cazenovia 0 (25-10, 25-9, 25-13)

Mount Holyoke came back after the Colby loss with a straight-set win over the Wildcats of Cazenovia, using 19 service aces and a season-high team attack percentage of .270.

First-year Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, Minn.) led her team in assists for the first time of the season with 13, to go with four aces. Abeja added seven assists and a team-high six aces.

Barton put down a match-high 11 kills against two errors on 22 attempts (.409), while Crosby was error-free on 15 attacks with five kills (.333). Simon had five kills while attacking at a .300 rate, and Rimando added three kills at a .600 rate. Berclaz collected 15 digs in the match.
