Volleyball Falls to Emerson, 3-0, in Season Finale

South Hadley, Mass. - October 30, 2021 - The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team wrapped up the 2021 season on Saturday as the Lyons fell to visiting Emerson College, 3-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play in Howard Gymnasium.

The Lions were victorious by the set scores of 25-22, 25-16, 25-19.

Leading Mount Holyoke was a pair of seven-kill performances from Marion Abeja (Kumi, Uganda) and Sarah Bishop (Rutland, Mass.), while Abeja also collected a team-best 12 assists, while Bishop recorded 13 digs in the match. Chelsea Galicia (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) registered a team-best 16 digs on the day.

Parker Cummings led Emerson with 13 kills while Rebecca Polsky and Shea McGovern combined for 29 assists as the Lions hit .228 in the match.

Mount Holyoke College used a 5-0 run to take an early 10-9 lead in the first set, capped by back-to-back kills from Gabi Davis (Keller, Texas) and Mar Simon (Miami, Fla.). Both sides then traded points until Emerson scored three-straight to control a 21-18 advantage. Simon and Abeja would deliver kills late in the frame but the visitors escaped with the 25-22 victory.

The game was even through most of the second set until Emerson used a six-point run to take a 14-8 advantage over the Lyons. Simon, Bishop and Davis all gathered kills in the late stages of the set but Emerson cruised to a 25-16 victory and 2-0 match lead.

It was another mid-set run for Emerson that helped the visitors clinch the three-set sweep as a kill from Cummings sparked a 6-0 run to give the Lions a 23-15 advantage. Mount Holyoke showed grit down the stretch, picking up a kill from Walden, but Emerson would eventually clinch the match, 3-0, on a kill from Carolyn Vaimoso.

With the loss, the Lyons post an overall record of 4-17 with an 0-10 mark against league opponents, while Emerson improves to 17-7 overall with a 6-4 record in conference play.
