Volleyball Powers Past Norwich For 3-1 Win Over Cadets

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Powered by a 16-kill effort from first year Jamesa Allen, the Mount Holyoke College volleyball team posted a 3-1 win (25-12, 25-17, 19-25, 25-13) over Norwich University in non-conference action on Wednesday evening. With the win, Mount Holyoke improves to 7-12 on the year, while the Cadets fall to 4-13 overall.

Allen (Orlando, Fla.) added four total blocks (2 solo, 2 assist), while also adding six digs, an assist and two service aces. Senior captain Emma Sweeting (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) chipped in with 10 kills, three service aces and eight digs, while junior setter Natalie Lyon (Oakton, Va.) had 31 assists with five digs. First year Sarah Caggiano (Leonardtown, Md.) collected a team-high 11 digs on the night.

Senior outside hitter Tara Lyons (Pocasset, Mass.) led the Cadets' offensive attack with 11 kills and two service aces with a block assists, while freshman Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) put up seven kills and four digs with a block assists on the night.

The Cadets bounced back in the third set, forcing a fourth game after a 25-19 win, but Mount Holyoke responded. Holding a narrow 10-9 lead on a kill by first year Isabell Linde (Red Bank, N.J.), the Lyons later broke the set open with kills from Allen and Caggiano to make it a 19-11 margin.

Mount Holyoke found its self on a 6-0 run to end the match, which included two kills from Allen and another from Caggiano to seal the 25-13 set win and the match victory.

Norwich will travel to West Hartford, Conn. for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match, taking on Lasell College in the opening round before closing the day against the host, the University of St. Joseph (Conn.). Mount Holyoke is back in action on Saturday, traveling to Western Connecticut State to take on Southern Maine (2pm) and the host Colonials (4pm).
