Track & Field Finishes Third at Spring Fling Invitational

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Backed by a number of outstanding performances, the Mount Holyoke College track & field team finished third at its own Spring Fling Invitational at the MHC Turf & Track on Saturday. The Lyons compiled 99 points on the afternoon, including four victories.

In the 200-meter dash, first year Minerva Veeser-Bobea (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) claimed victory with a time of 28.10. Sophomore captain Donari Yahzid (Atlanta, Ga./Fountain Valley School of Colorado) was third overall with a time of 28.47, while first years Caitlin Lynch (Worcester, Mass./Doherty Memorial) and Kayla Taylor (Miami Gardens, Fla./Mater Academy Charter) placed seventh (29.76) and eighth (30.60), respectively.

The 800-meter run saw first year Alicia Moroyoqui (Groton, Conn./Robert E. Fitch) post third with a time of 2:28.66. Sophomore Corrin Moss (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Alternative HS) was sixth with a mark of 2:37.16, while first year Michelle Serrano (Los Angeles, Calif./West Adams Preparatory) and junior Julia Criscione (Bernardsville, N.J./Villa Walsh Academy) were ninth (2:47.66) and 10th (2:53.49), respectively.

Moss went on to place second overall in the 1500-meter run, crossing the line with a time of 5:14.74, while sophomore Emsie Cronin (Ledyard, Conn./Ledyard) was sixth with a time of 5:26.75. Serrano was ninth as well in the event with a mark of 5:35.09.

Junior Mia Barnes (Thornville, Ohio/Monteverde Friends School) captured victory in the grueling 10,000-meter run, crossing the line with a time of 41:30.89, while classmate Hannah Gershone (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) was fourth with a time of 44:08.72.

The Lyons saw junior Shante Henderson (New York, N.Y./Brooklyn Theatre Arts School) win the 100-meter hurdles with a mark of 16.93, while in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, first year Emma Raney (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) was fourth with a time of 13:24.45.

In the 4x100 relay, the foursome of Veeser-Bobea, Lynch, Henderson and Yahzid ran to second overall with a time of 52.83, while the 4x400 relay of Veeser-Bobea, Taylor, junior Kelly Stevens (Southboro, Mass./Worcester Academy) and first year Brigit Wolf (New Providence, N.J./Union County Magnet HS) was third with a time of 4:54.53.

Rounding out the efforts on the field side of the action was sophomore Julia Hecking (Greenville, Pa./Greenville), won the hammer throw in a distance of 35.09 meters. She also placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 26.70 meters, while junior Maria Lewis (Boston, Mass./Fenway) was eighth in the javelin throw with a distance of 20.41 meters.

This year's winner on the women's side was Smith College, which posted 191 points. Eastern Connecticut State was second with 148 points, followed by Mount Holyoke (99), Sage (62) and Hampshire (45). Eastern Connecticut State claimed victory on the men's side with 218 points.

Mount Holyoke returns to action next weekend when it travels to Brunswick, Maine to compete at the 2017 Aloha Relays at Bowdoin College. Action begins on Friday and runs through Saturday.
