First-years make big contribution as swim team opens at the University of New England

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team recorded three first-place swims, including two by first-year student-athletes, as the Lyons officially opened their 2025-26 season in a head-to-head meet at the University of New England on Saturday.

The host Nor'easters outscored the Lyons 155-106 in a meet that didn't include any diving events.

First-year Evelyn Rousseau (Hudsonville, Mich.) took first place in the 1,000-yard freestyle, with a time of 12:20.81, and first-year Maya Oakes (Pine Bush, N.Y.) won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:06.76, and placed second in the 50-yard backstroke (31.65).

Junior Isabel Dunn (Harbor Springs, Mich.) also took a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.34), and finished second in the 50 fly (29.61).

Other highlights for the Lyons included:

  • First-year Ellie Lewis (Spencer, Ind.) took second place in three events: the 50 breast (35.18), the 100 breast (1:17.74), and the 200 individual medley (2:32.91).
  • Senior captain Sophie Allen (Lopez Island, Wash.) placed second in both the 50 free (27.61) and the 100 free (1:01.44).
  • First-year Katie Thomason (Alexandria, Va.) placed second in both the 100 fly (1:10.59) and the 1,000 free (12:23.54).
  • Junior Madeline Hood (The Colony, Texas) took second place in the 200 free (2:16.03).

"Overall, we swam well. I'm proud of how the team competed and we were able to out-touch some swimmers in close races," said head coach Dave Allen. "It was exciting to see Evelyn and Maya win races in their first college meet."

Mount Holyoke will host Westfield State on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 1pm.
