SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Powered by a number of strong efforts, the Smith College swimming & diving team posted a 167-119 victory over Mount Holyoke College on Saturday afternoon. The Lyons were paced by a pair of relay and three individual wins on a day in which the squad honored its four graduating seniors.

The Lyons opened the meet with a solid victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The foursome oof senior captain Anne Kuenning, junior Claire Beckett, senior Katie Tyler and senior captain Emily Craig notched a time of 1:55.44, outpacing second place by nearly a second.

First year Natalie Burkett then swam to second overall in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a mark of 11:56.12. Classmate Sarah Ratzlaff was fourth (12:22.63), while sophomore Delany Berry was fifth (12:38.67).

In the 200-yard free, Craig finished second with a time of 2:03.63, while sophomore Monika Sharma was fifth (2:31.55). The 100-yard backstroke saw Kuenning place second with a time of 1:03.27, while Berry was fourth (1:14.19) and first year Jane Zhang was fifth (1:22.91).

Beckett went on to place runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:16.48, while sophomore Kate Flaherty was fifth (1:20.93). Ratzlaff then posted third in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:48.49.

Tyler grabbed the Lyons first individual win of the afternoon in the 50-yard free, hitting the wall with a time of 25.71. Kuenning was third (27.49), while Flaherty was sixth (30.72).

The 1-meter diving event saw MHC first year Samantha Nemivant win with a score of 273.60, while in the 100-yard free, Craig was second (57.02) and Burkett was third (1:02.36). Kuenning finished third in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:18.30, while Beckett and Berry were fourth (2:32.45) and fifth (2:32.80), respectively.

Tyler took to the pool once more in the 200-yard breast, posting second overall with a time of 2:40.81, while senior Tristan Strange was fifth in the event with a mark of 3:14.25. The 500-yard free then saw Craig, Burkett and Ratzlaff place third (5:45.69), fourth (5:50.59) and fifth (6:03.75), respectively.

In the 100-yard fly, Tyler grabbed another runner-up spot with a time of 1:04.22, while in the 3-meter diving event, Nemivant placed third with a score of 268.50 points.

Beckett grabbed the win in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:32.16, while in the final event of the afternoon, Flaherty, Berry, Burkett and Ratzlaff combined for a time of 4:10.28 for the victory in the 400-yard free relay.

Both teams are now idle until February 16 when the conference converges on WPI for the 2017 NEWMAC Championships. Action runs from the 16th through the 19th with preliminary rounds at 10am and finals beginning at 6pm each evening.
