Swimming & Diving Suffers Tough Loss at Simmons

BOSTON, Mass. - Despite several solid efforts, the Mount Holyoke College swimming & diving team was unable to get past Simmons College, falling 186-102 in dual meet action on Saturday. With the victory, the Sharks move to 12-0 on the season, while the Lyons slip to 2-7 overall.

In the opening relay - the 200-yard medley - the foursome of first year Sarah Ratzlaff, junior Claire Beckett, first year Jane Zhang and sophomore Kate Flaherty finished third overall with a time of 2:09.57.

First year Natalie Burkett then put forth a strong effort in the 1000-yard freestyle, placing third with a time of 12:02.03. Sophomore Delany Berry also finished well, touching the wall in fifth with a mark of 12:39.01.

The 200-yard free was next as senior captain Emily Craig was second with a time of 2:04.58, while in the 50-yard backstroke classmate and fellow captain Anne Kuenning was second with a time of 30.03.

Beckett then grabbed victory for the Lyons, posting a mark of 34.22 to win the 50-yard breaststroke. Sophomore Bri Groves then powered her way to second overall in the 100-yard butterfly, touching with a time of 1:04.75.

Senior Katie Tyler led MHC into the swimming break with a thrid place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a mark of 26.17. Sophomore Monika Sharma also did well in the event, finishing fifth with a time of 32.90.

First year diver Samantha Nemivant grabbed victory on the 1-meter, posting a score of 247.65 points. She would later claim the win off the 3-meter board with 259.57 points.

Back from the break, Craig posted second in the 100-yard free with a time of 57.63, while Flaherty and Zhang were fifth (1:06.71) and sixth (1:09.04), respectively. Kuenning then placed second in the 100-yard back with a time of 1:05.34, while in the 100-yard breast, Groves was second with a time of 1:13.27.

Craig and Kuenning then posted second (5:44.64) and third (5:46.69), respectively, in the 500-yard free, while Tyler picked up MHC's second swimming victory of the day in the 50-yard fly - she touched the wall with a winning time of 27.49.

Groves then placed second in the 200-yard individual medley with a mark of 2:22.80. In the final relay of the afternoon, the Lyons earned the 200-yard free victory in a time of 1:45.47. The foursome of Tyler, Kuenning, Craig and Groves posted the winning mark.

Mount Holyoke returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Smith College at 1pm. That meet will also mark Senior Day for the four members of the Lyons graduating class.
