Squash Drops Season Opener with Wesleyan

South Hadley, Mass. - November 20, 2021 - The Mount Holyoke College squash team fell to visiting Wesleyan University, 8-1, as the Lyons played their season opener at the MHC Squash Courts on Saturday afternoon.

Mount Holyoke's Mihiliya Kalahe (Panadura, Sri Lanka) was the lone victor for the Lyons, defeating Laila Kewalramani 3-0 (11-2, 11-2, 11-6) at the top spot. At No. 2, Xaria Durocher (Boston, Mass.) made her collegiate debut and dropped a 3-0 decision to Anika Kewalramani before Giselle Cabrera (Bronx, N.Y.) fell to Marangela James at No. 3 in three games.

Senior Melissa Marquez (Waterbury, Conn.)  fell in three games to Portia Pliam at No. 4, while in the fifth slot, Elba Barra Montgomery (Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania) lost to Emma Smith, 3-0. First year Paige Gershuny (Cape Girardeau, Mo.) was entered at No. 6 for her first-ever collegiate match and fell to Annie Roach in three games, while Dnyaneshwari Haware (Mumbai, India) fell at No. 7, 3-0. 

The Lyons had to default the eighth and ninth slot as the Cardinals emerged with the 8-1 victory.

Up next, Mount Holyoke will travel to Bard on Sunday, November 21 for a 1 p.m. contest.
