Squash's Methsarani Helps Sri Lanka to Bronze Medal at 13th South Asian Games in Nepal

South Hadley, Mass. - December 11, 2019 - Sophomore Mihiliya Methsarani (Panadura, Sri Lanka) of the Mount Holyoke College squash team recently competed at the 13th South Asian Games in Nepal and helped lead her home country of Sri Lanka to Bronze following the team competition.

Methsarani, a Psychology major at Mount Holyoke College, helped Sri Lanka to a 3-0 victory over Nepal in the team's final competition, leading to the third-place finish. Overall, Methsarani went 2-1 in three matches, as she opened team play with a 3-0 win over Amna Fayyaz of Pakistan before falling to Sunayana Sara Kuruvilla of India. Against Nepal, Methsarani took on Krishna Thapa and won 3-0 to help lift Sri Lanka to Bronze.

The Bronze-medal finish adds to an already impressive international resume for Methsarani, as she has competed in the Asian Youth Games, the South Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games, all of which she has earned medals. Methsarani is considered the top squash player in Sri Lanka, having won the National Squash Championship in her home country six times (2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018).

Methsarani also qualified to compete for Sri Lanka at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, where she became the first-ever Sri Lankan squash player to qualify for the final round of an international squash tournament after earning a spot in the plate final round and collecting a bronze medal during the women's singles event. At the Asian Youth Games in 2013, Methsarani earned a bronze medal in women's singles, before once again earning bronze at the 2015 Youth Commonwealth Games and the 2016 South Asian Games.

Methsarani and the Mount Holyoke College squash team will return to competition on Tuesday, January 7 and will travel to Yale for a 2 p.m. match.
