South Hadley, Mass. - November 25, 2019 - Mount Holyoke College's standout sophomore Mihiliya Methsarani (Panadura, Sri Lanka) of the squash team will be competing in the 2019 South Asian Games, hosted in Nepal from December 1 through December 11. The women's squash competition is set to begin on Thursday, December 5.
Methsarani is no stranger to the international stage, as the Psychology major has competed in the Asian Youth Games, the South Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games, all of which she has earned medals. Currently, Methsarani is considered the top squash player in Sri Lanka, having won the National Squash Championship in her home country six times (2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018).
Methsarani also qualified to compete for Sri Lanka at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, where she became the first-ever Sri Lankan squash player to qualify for the final round of an international squash tournament after earning a spot in the plate final round and collecting a bronze medal during the women's singles event. At the Asian Youth Games in 2013, Methsarani earned a bronze medal in women's singles, before once again earning bronze at the 2015 Youth Commonwealth Games and the 2016 South Asian Games.
Methsarani has had a great start to the 2019-20 season for Mount Holyoke College, as she was one of two victors against No. 17 Tufts on November 17, 2019. Methsarani took down Claire Davidson from the Jumbos in three sets, cruising to victory by winning the games 11-5, 11-9 and 11-8. In the Lyons' next match versus St. Lawrence, Methsarani was victorious over Sanna Koivumaki, 3-0 (11-8, 11-6, 11-9), delivering the victory for Mount Holyoke College. During her first year at Mount Holyoke College, Methsarani went 23-2 overall and was the national runner-up in the Holleran Cup B Division North Championship, having won matches versus student-athletes from Haverford, Stanford and Columbia.
