Lewiston, ME - The Mount Holyoke College squash team returned to action on Sunday afternoon, shouldering a tough loss on the road at Bates. The #24 Bobcats had a strong outing, earning a 9-0 victory over the #27 Lyons.
Action got underway with the evens as junior Kristyna Alexova (Boskovice, Czech Republic/Sportovni Gymnazium) bested junior Ragini Ghose (Dubai/Millfield School), 11-8, 11-4, 13-11. From the four, first year Maeve O'Brien (Essex, Conn./Valley Regional) posted an 11-7, 11-6, 11-1 victory over MHC's junior Lessly Portillo (New Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career Magnet), while junior Molly Brooks (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield School) took the, 11-4, 11-1, 11-4 win over Tanishka Sachidanand (Karnataka, India/Canadian International School) from the six. Rounding out the evens was Bates' Katie Bull (Sudbury, Mass./Middlesex School), who grabbed an, 11-6, 11-0, 11-4 win from the eight spot.
At the top of the ladder, Bobcat sophomore Luca Polgar (Budapest, Hungary/Hotchkiss School) picked up an 11-2, 11-3, 11-3 win over senior captain Brandy Williamson (New York, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy). At the three spot, MHC's senior captain Emily Chang (Carmichael, Calif./Mira Loma) snagged the second game of the set, but ultimately fell 11-4, 7-11, 11-4, 11-1 to sophomore Eliza Dunham (New Haven, Conn./Taft School).
From the five and the seven, both first year Katie Manternach (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Ann's School) and senior Cata Robert (Riverside, Conn./Brooks School) each picked up wins over first years Kuzivakwashe Madungwe (Harare, Zimbabwe/Arundel School) and Emma Robson (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional), respectively. Rounding out the odds at the ninth spot in the ladder, senior Hannah Conner (Groton, Mass./Groton School) bested captain Kirina Gair-Michael (West Hartford, Conn./Ethel Walker School), 11-3, 11-6, 11-3 to round out the 9-0 victory.
Bates College is set to travel to Hamilton on Friday for the NESCAC tournament, while Mount Holyoke will trek to Smith College for the Seven Sisters Championship on Saturday.
