Lacrosse Suffers NEWMAC Loss at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. - Senior captain Kirsten Kilburn netted a game-best five goals, but the Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team could not hold off Wheaton College, falling by a 13-5 margin in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Wednesday evening.

With the win, the Lyons of Wheaton improve to 7-4 overall and remain perfect in conference play with a 3-0 mark. The Lyons of MHC slip to 4-5 and 1-2 in the NEWMAC.

Mount Holyoke opened the game's scoring as Kilburn scored on the free position at the 24:30 mark. The advantage was short-lived as Wheaton fired off four straight, including a pair from Katie Peters and three assists from Allie Bush, to grab the 4-1 lead.

Kilburn cut the deficit to one (4-3), notching back-to-back scores, including an unassisted tally with 5:51 to go in the opening half, but Wheaton answered. Three straight goals over the final 3:46 by Brooke Sabol made it a 7-3 lead for the home team.

In the second half, Wheaton grabbed a quick goal, but Kilburn once again responded for MHC. With an unassisted taly and a score assisted by junior captain Catherine Ryan, the visitors pulled to within 8-5 with 12:10 to go.

Wheaton would go on a 5-0 run to close out the scoring, including a pair of goals from Jenna Tewksbury and Melanie Sharick, along with three more assists from Bush. She finished with a game-best eight helpers in the contest.

In goal, Wheaton's Katy Ananian stopped 11 shots in the victory, while MHC's Isa Rodriguez made 14 saves before giving way to Clarissa Leight in the final 1:37. She was not forced to make any stops.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Wheaton hosts Babson at 1pm, while MHC takes on Springfield at home at 12pm.
