Shrewsbury, Mass. - April 9, 2022 - The Mount Holyoke College rowing team opened their spring season at the Donahue Rowing Center on Saturday as the Lyons had a pair of boats taking on the likes of Clark, Simmons, University of Rochester, WPI, Pacific Lutheran, Washington College, Williams and Conn College.
The Lyons took on some of the top teams in the country, as five of the teams in Saturday's field were ranked in the Top 15 of Division III.
"Today was a great start to the season against a tough field," said head Mount Holyoke rowing coach Seth Hussey. "For the first 2ks since 2019 we are feeling pretty good about it. We have plenty of work left to do!"
Senior Jaya Nagarajan-Swenson (Berkeley, Calif.), who was coxswain, led a boat of Celeste Keep (Bolton, Mass.), Ellie Mohn (Exeter, Conn.), Simran Kaur (Hanover, N.H.), Emma Waldron (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Jocelyn Greer (Athens, N.Y.), Jill Slatch (Gansevoort, N.Y.), Lilla Carroll (Birmingham, Ala.) and Bea Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) which took second overall with a time of 7:33.79 to advance to the V8 Grand Finals. There, Swenson's crew was fifth overall with a time of 8:10.4.
Next was a boat led by Jennifer Butler (Knoxville, Tenn.) at coxswain and featured Claire Gabel (Watertown, Mass.), Piper LaPointe (Norfolk, Mass.), Reeve Haefele (Rockville, Md.), Meghan French (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.), Liv Romanowsky (Simsbury, Conn.), Abby Files (Milton, Mass.), Arin Rinvelt (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Katherine Dailey (Camden, Maine), which, took fourth in their first heat of the day, finishing 23.81 seconds behind the leaders. Later in the day, Butler's crew competed in the 2V8 Petite Final and clocked a time of 8:44.25, finishing second overall.
Mount Holyoke College returns to action on Saturday, April 16 when the Lyons return to the Donahue Rowing Center to take on Assumption and Coast Guard. Racing will begin at 11 a.m.
