BOSTON, Mass. - Senior Kate Karraker posted 12 points, but it wasn't enough as the Mount Holyoke College basketball team suffered a 46-30 loss at Emerson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Lyons slip to 4-11 and 1-4 in conference play, while the host Lions move to 9-6 and 4-3 in the NEWMAC.
Emerson was paced by a game-high 13 points from Kristin Brice, who went on to add six rebounds and an assist. Sierra Ducey came off the bench to record nine points and a game-best 13 rebounds. She also had two assists, a steal and a block. Additionally, Maya Savino and Mario Santora each added six points.
In addition to Karraker, who also had four boards and two steals, Mount Holyoke saw Amber Legare add eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds. She also had an assist and two steals. Senior Nicole DeMarchena had seven points, nine rebounds, two blocks, two assists and a game-best five steals.
Emerson jumped out to the early 14-7 lead, capitalizing on back-to-back layups by Brice at 14:27. MHC was able to close the gap to five late in the frame on a free throw from Legare, but the homestanding Lions took a 23-18 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Emerson quickly added to its score as Emily Cameron drained a quick three in the opening minute and a half. A trey from Karraker pulled it to 29-23 with 14:11 on the clock, but Emerson continued to answer.
Emerson went on a 5-0 run to take a 38-26 lead with 5:48 left and despite four more points down the stretch from Karraker, MHC could not pull even.
Mount Holyoke returns to action on Wednesday in a 7pm game at Clark University.
