Basketball Edged at Albertus Magnus

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Senior Kate Karraker posted a game-high 21 points and classmate Amber Legare laid down a double-double with a game-best four blocks, but it wasn't enough as the Lyons fell to Albertus Magnus by a 75-65 margin in non-conference action on Wednesday evening. With the win, the Falcons improve to 3-4, while Mount Holyoke moves to 1-6.

Karraker, who went 6-for-14 from three-point range, added a rebound, four assists, a steal and a block. Legare chipped in 17 points and 14 rebounds, while first year Yvonne Dean-Bailey posted 17 points with three boards, three assists and a block.

For the Falcons, Kelsey Pendagast scored 17 points and pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds, while Tyler Evans added 19 points and eight rebounds. Alexa Riley tallied eight points, while Olivia Bolden finished the game 8-of-18 from the field for a game-high 21 points to go along with nine rebounds.

The Falcons opened the contest with a 7-0 run thanks to four points from Pendagast before pushing out to a 12-4 lead on an Evans layup.  Midway through the first half, the Lyons pulled to within three at 16-13 as Karraker knocked down a three pointer but the Falcons answered with a 13-0 run in a span of 4:08 to take a 29-13 lead.

At the halftime break, the Falcons led 36-20 behind 13 points from Bolden.

The visiting Lyons bounced back in the second half, outscoring the Falcons by a 45-39 margin, including a 56.3% (18-32) from the field after shooting just 29.6% in the opening half. MHC also shot 7-for-14 from behind the arc in the frame.

Despite being out-scored 45-39 in the second half, the Falcons held on to the victory.  Pendagast scored 13 of her 17 points in the second stanza, while she also pulled down 11 boards in the frame.

The Falcons' largest lead of the contest was 20 points when they led 40-20 less than a minute into the second half.  Mount Holyoke battled back to within four at 54-50 with 11 minutes remaining in the contest.  A 12-5 run pushed the Falcons' lead back into double-digits to secure the victory.

Albertus returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 6 when the Falcons travel to Purchase for a noon non-conference contest. The Lyons are also in action on Saturday, hosting MIT to open NEWMAC play at 1pm.
