SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Rachel Simkewicz scored two goals and Hailey Gaydos had two assists to lead Springfield College to a 4-1 victory over the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team on Saturday afternoon on the MHC Turf.
The visiting Pride (9-5, 4-2 NEWMAC) hold on to sole possession of fourth place in the NEWMAC standings with the win.
Mount Holyoke (4-9, 0-6 NEWMAC) next plays at Smith College Tuesday at 6pm.
Springfield had an 18-7 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in penalty corners for the game.
Simkewicz got Springfield on the scoreboard with 2:46 remaining in the first quarter, slapping in a cross from Gaydos for her 13th goal.
The Pride added two goals less than two minutes apart in the second quarter to take a 3-0 lead into halftime. Ava Coppola scored her second goal of the season on an assist from Amber Wolkner with 6:45 to go in the half. With 4:55 remaining, Simkewicz scored her 14th goal with a feed from Clare Moore.
Gaydos fed Samara Skully with 10:10 remaining in the third quarter for a 4-0 Pride lead.
Mount Holyoke got into the scoring column with 3:50 left in the game, with two first-years combining on the score. First-year Rory Bernardo (Oaklyn, N.J.) sent the ball into the middle, where it was deflected out to first-year Carmella Beach (Takoma Park, Md.) in front. Beach tapped the ball past a defender to classmate Zoey Candito (Belchertown, Mass.), who one-timed a shot into the cage for her first career goal, and Beach's first career assist.
Sam Orcutt made two saves for Springfield in the win, while Mount Holyoke senior Ainsley Gruener (Topsfield, Mass.) made 10 saves for the Lyons. Senior Taylor Vettori (Etna, N.H.) also recorded a defensive assist in the first quarter.
Springfield rises to 23-17-1 all-time against Mount Holyoke.
